Rangers star in starting XI as Scotland take on Moldova at Hampden

Rangers defender Nathan Patterson has been named in the Scotland starting XI for tonight’s clash with Moldova at Hampden as Steve Clarke looks to salvage their World Cup qualification hopes.

The defender only returned to training yesterday after a spell isolating as a result of being identified as a close contact of someone who tested positive for Covid-19; forcing him to miss last weekend’s Old Firm clash.

The Rangers teen won his first cap earlier this summer in the pre-tournament warm-up games before Euro 2020 before appearing against Croatia in the final group game and becoming the youngest player to represent Scotland at a major finals.

Patterson was given the nod ahead of Stephen O’Donnell and the Rangers star will no doubt have plenty of backing from Gers fans as he makes his first full international start – despite many not exactly holding warm feelings towards the national team.

After losing to Denmark in their opening qualifying game, Scotland can’t afford anything other than three points from tonight’s game as Moldova are the first visitors to Hampden.

A trip to Austria this coming midweek puts the pressure on Scotland to win tonight and hope they can pick up some sort of result in midweek in their bid to reach the World Cup for the first time since 1998.

Meanwhile, a key Rangers star has been talking about his future at Ibrox amid £15m links out of the club this summer.
