He's Had Surgery - Steven Gerrard Provides Update On Rangers Star

The highly-rated Sweden international defender pulled up with an injury during the Gers’ 2-1 win over St Johnstone at the weekend and was instantly a doubt for his side’s Europa League meeting with Lyon.

Gerrard has confirmed that Helander will not make the game against the French side and, with him having had surgery, expects a substantial absence.

The Rangers boss told a press conference: “Helander will be missing, he has had surgery in the last 48 hours and will be missing for the foreseeable future.”

And he indicated the absence will be a period of months, adding: “It is difficult to put a time on his return for now but will be at least a few months.”

However, while Helander is out, Gerrard will be able to count on Connor Goldson, relieving him of a defensive headache.

“Connor Goldson comes back and is available for tomorrow.

“I am confident we have cover and will manage despite being disappointed Filip is missing.”

Gerrard is looking forward to his side locking horns with Lyon under the lights at Ibrox and believes European evenings have the potential to become even more special at Ibrox.

“I hope the European nights keep getting more special here, I’ve really enjoyed the European nights.

“I have loved it as a player and as a manager.”

Rangers will be aiming to open their Europa League group campaign with a win against Lyon.
