Edmundson latest as Derby's Championship rivals show interest

Derby County will be looking to bolster their squad ahead of the new Championship campaign and here are the latest transfer links and rumours involving the Rams.

The Rams are operating under a transfer embargo currently but they are hoping that will be lifted once everything is sorted with the EFL and a potential new ownership.

Derby can still sign players as long as there are no transfer fees involved and wages are sensible.

The transfer rumour mill has moved up a gear with plenty of talk of possible ins and outs at Derby.

George Edmundson

Peterborough United are keen on Rangers defender George Edmundson, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Derby County.

Newly-promoted to the Championship, Peterborough are looking to buy the 23-year-old defender, the Daily Record is reporting.

But the report says Edmundson is not for sale and that Rangers boss Steven Gerrard wants to bring him back into his first-team fold.

Derby are thought to be keen on Edmundson but the club is operating under a transfer embargo currently.

He made 10 league appearances for the Rams last season, including eight starts, and would have played more games but he was sidelined for half a dozen after undergoing a hernia operation.

He joined Rangers from Oldham Athletic in 2019 in a £650,000 deal.

Archie Brown

Derby County youngster Archie Brown has joined Swiss Super League side Luasanne Sport, as announced by the Swiss club's website.

The 19-year-old left-sided player was a regular with the Rams Under-23s in the past season.

Derby's retained list released showed that Brown and Festy Ebosele had been offered new contracts.

Brown helped the Under-18s win the Premier League title in 2019 and scored a hat-trick in a 5-2 win against Arsenal in the National Final.

Derby will be due compensation.

Kyle Lafferty

Derby County-linked striker Kyle Lafferty has agreed to join Cypriot side Anorthosis Famagusta.

The Rams were one of several Championship clubs said to have had the 33-year-old Northern Ireland international on their radar following his release from Kilmarnock, including West Brom and Wigan.

But Lafferty will not be staying in the British Isles, instead signing a one-year contract with Anorthosis, who have made it through to the Europa League qualifying rounds next season after lifting the Cypriot Cup last month.

Lafferty scored 13 goals in 13 games during his six months at Killie, a tally that was not enough to keep them in the Scottish Premiership as they lost the play-off with Dundee to suffer relegation.

At the conclusion of his contract, Lafferty has now headed abroad. He is not afraid to broaden his horizons having already played in Switzerland, Italy, Turkey, and Norway during his career.

Stephen O'Donnell

Derby County are being linked with a summer move for one of Scotland's stars from their goalless draw against England at Wembley.

Motherwell full-back Stephen O’Donnell played a key role in the clash with England at the Euros.

He also forced a fine save from Jordan Pickford in the first half.

The 29-year old is attracting interest from five Championship clubs, including Derby.

Birmingham City, Blackpool, Blackburn Rovers and Barnsley are all showing an interest, according to the Daily Mail.

The Mail reports that O'Donnell has an exit clause in his Motherwell contract and that any fee would be relatively modest.

Derby are currently operating under a transfer embargo. They can still sign players as long as there are no transfer fees and wages are under the embargo-compliant level.

Lee Gregory

Lee Gregory has been linked with a move away from Stoke City but reports from Middlesbrough suggest he will not be heading to Teesside.

Middlesbrough had been one of the Championship clubs reportedly interested in the 32-year-old, who has a year left to run on his Stoke contract.

Gregory spent the second half of last season on loan at Derby County and had scored three goals in 11 games (six starts) before a hamstring injury ended his season in early April.

Rams boss Wayne Rooney was impressed by Gregory's contribution and the way he fitted into the squad. Rooney said he would look at Gregory's situation this summer.

TeessideLive has taken a look at the strikers reportedly interesting Middlesbrough and concluded Gregory is not on the shortlist.

They say: "Gregory is one striker who will be let go as he reaches the end of his contract and Boro have been credited with interest. However, our understanding is that he is not a summer target for the club."

Jack Marriott

Derby County striker Jack Marriott is in talks over a move to Hull City.

Hull are preparing for life back in the Championship after winning the League One title.

And the Tigers have stepped in to offer Marriott a route back to east Yorkshire after he failed to agree terms on a new deal with the Rams, our colleagues at HullLive are reporting.

Josh Bowler

Blackpool have signed winger Josh Bowler on a free transfer.

The 22-year-old joins the newly-promoted Championship side after being released by Everton.

Derby County had previously been linked with Bowler, who had a loan spell at Hull City in 2019-20 where he played 28 times.

Bowler has signed a one-year deal at Blackpool with an option to extend by a further year.

Cameron Jerome

Former Derby County striker Cameron Jerome is back in the Championship.

The 34-year-old has joined Luton Town on a free transfer from MK Dons.

Jerome is vastly experienced at Championship level having won promotion three times.

He signed for Derby in January 2018 under then manager Gary Rowett and scored some important goals towards the end of the season as the Rams reached the play-offs, only to lose to Fulham.

His goal gave Derby a first-leg lead in their semi-final against Fulham, but they lost the second leg 2-0.

He scored six goals in 20 appearances (10 starts) for the Rams.

Scott Carson

Scott Carson is set to sign for Manchester City on a free transfer, says the Manchester Evening News.

The 35-year-old goalkeeper has been released by Derby County after six years at the club.

He has spent the past two seasons on loan at City where he has provuided cover for Ederson and Zac Steffen.

Carson joined Derby from Wigan Athlteic in 2015 and made 171 appearances.

New scholars

Youngsters Adebayo Fapetu and Dubem Eze are among the intake of new scholars at Derby County.

The Rams retained list confirmed that both players had joined the club.

Midfielder Fapetu is joining Derby after 10 years at the Arsenal academy while midfielder Eze arrives from Chelsea, who did not offer him a scholarship.

Players beginning first year of scholarship: Nelson Aideyan, Zion Dixon, Harry Evans, Dubem Eze, Adebayo Fapetu, Riley Moloney, Callum Moore, Reece Nicholas-Davies, Darren Robinson, Kain Ryan, Sam Sebagabo.

Matt Crooks

Derby are reportedly interested in Rotherham midfielder Matt Crooks – but would face competition for the 27 year old.

The East Anglian Daily Times reports Ipswich Town are keen, but reckons the Rams would also like to recruit a player who netted seven goals last season.

Crooks’ efforts weren’t enough to keep the Millers in the Championship as Derby stayed up at their expense on a dramatic final day. But the 6ft 4in midfielder’s efforts added to his reputation, having scored 11 goals the previous year to help his club win promotion from League One.

Crooks, who can play in central midfield or as a striker, is entering the final year of his contract.
