Assombalonga released by Middlesborough amid Rangers links

Middlesbrough have confirmed that they have released powerhouse striker Britt Assombalonga on their retained list. It comes just weeks after reports claimed Steven Gerrard is considering a move to bring the DR Congo international to Rangers. Now, he will be able to do so on a free transfer.

Assombalonga, 28, has endured a difficult season under Neil Warnock at Middlesbrough. While he has clocked up 31 Championship appearances for Boro, he has only managed five goals. However, it is not a true reflection of his quality – rather his 75 goals in 221 Championship games is more like it.

Give Me Sport claimed in March that Assombalonga was being eyed by Gerrard and Rangers, as they embark on a Champions League qualifying stage. However, they are not alone in their pursuit, with French and Belgian clubs also looking to take a chance on the striker.

Now a free agent, should Rangers move for Assombalonga?

Rangers have options in the final third. Alfredo Morelos is a very similar player to Assombalonga, but probably more ruthless in front of goal. Kemar Roofe gives Rangers something they did not have before – a bit of creativity and unpredictability in the final third. Both have amassed plenty of goals.

Celtic strike Premier Sports deal - is this the "additional value" we've been waiting for?

Jermain Defoe and Cedric Itten are also options. But Assombalonga would given Rangers proper quality – with Defoe’s future in doubt and Itten struggling. On a free, it is surely a no-brainer. The Boro captain’s record in the Championship is sensational, one that shouldn’t be overlooked.
