Salih Ozcan Rangers transfer news as new Koln boss won't give up on contract

Premiership winners Rangers have been dealt a blow in any possible pursuit of reported target Salih Ozcan.

German football magazine Kicker reported earlier this month that Steven Gerrard is lining up Koln midfielder Ozcan as a potential addition to the Ibrox engine room.

There was even the suggestion it could be a low-cost replacement if one of their stars departs for the Premier League such as Glen Kamara, who brushed off transfer speculation on Tuesday night.

But in the meantime, new Koln boss Steffen Baumgart has now taken over from Friedhelm Funkel in a deal that was organised before Effzeh secured their Bundesliga status in a play-off with Holstein Kiel.

The club's sporting director Horst Heldt previously admitted his prospects of signing a new deal weren't looking good before that two-legged success against Kiel.

He said: "It seems difficult for us to sign a contract with Salih Ozcan. Still, we are in talks and everything is possible."

But the new man appears to have a more positive outlook - and that might not be good news for Rangers or other interested teams.

According to Sport Bild, Baumgart is ready to make an attractive offer for the 23-year-old and even if his current deal expires at the end of June without an extension they won't be prepared to give up.

It's also claimed other Bundesliga sides and Turkish champions Besiktas have put out feelers for Ozcan - who is of Turkish descent.
